Deacons Fund

Deacons Fund
The Deacons Fund is intended to meet the special needs that arise within our community. Funds are collected every Sunday through the special envelopes that are available in the pews. We give from our abundance in order to help those in our community who have sudden, unexpected needs. We encourage you to support this important ministry each week as you are able.

Do you know about the Deacons Fund?  It is as old as this church community (nearly 130 years), and in concept is as old as the earliest church.  In the first century, as the church increased in number, Deacons were selected from the “community of disciples, followers of good standing, full of wisdom.”  Among the first deacons was Stephen, “a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit.”  These original 7 men “stood before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.” (Acts: 6: 1-6)  The word deacon is derived from the Greek word diakonos which is an ancient Greek word meaning “servant.”  Wayzata Community Church is served by 15 men and women who commit to a three year term on the Board of Deacons.  They are truly servants of this congregation in many ways.

One of the ways they serve is to administer a fund that is designated for short-term, emergency assistance for people connected to Wayzata Community Church. These dollars are used confidentially, at the discretion of the pastors, and with the consent of the Board of Deacons.

Many in our community have been helped through tough times.  “When I lost my job and could not pay to heat our home for my family, it was the Deacons Fund that came to the rescue. It is a good and wonderful feeling to know that WCC is here to help its members in a time of need,” says one grateful member, who has since been able to contribute to the Deacons Fund in thanksgiving.

We ask your continued help in three ways.
•  First, we want to know if you are experiencing an emergency need in your life, you can come to any of the clergy with that need.
•  Second, we ask that in times of abundance, please remember to regularly share your spare change and loose bills, or dedicate a financial gift to keep this important fund healthy throughout the year.  Only the money that is put into the red Deacons Fund envelopes in the pew racks is available to this fund.  Every little bit counts.
•  And third, we are occasionally asked to help the stranger in our midst, with emergency relief. I have found the best way to do this is to have a supply of gas and food cards that I can give for temporary and immediate relief.  We received a very generous gift about a year ago— and it has sustained us until recently.  If you have the resource to help, I ask that you purchase an extra gift card ($10-20) when you are out shopping and put the card in a Deacons Fund Envelope (found in the pews). Cards from Holiday, Cub, Lunds, Target, Jimmy John’s, and McDonalds are especially appreciated and most often used for food, fuel, and diapers. Think about this way to share, when you have extra to give.

It is truly a gift to be able to give. Thank you for your generosity, and thank you in advance for your spare change— it makes a big difference.
