ADULT FAITH SPEAKERS: WCC DOES MISSION

Lisa Mears | Bridge for Youth
Wednesday,
October 1, 6:30 p.m. in the chapel
Come be part of a powerful conversation about youth homelessness in our community! Lisa Mears, President of Bridge for Youth, will guide us through the complex realities facing young people experiencing homelessness—and the hope-filled solutions that can make a difference. Together, we’ll explore the root causes of youth homelessness in our community, innovative approaches being used to address it, and how we, as a church community, can take meaningful action to support our most vulnerable youth. This is more than a talk—it’s an invitation to learn, reflect, and to determine how to engage in compassionate action.

Tommy McBrayer | Don’t Shoot Guns, Shoot Hoops
Wednesday,
October 8, 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel
Join us for an impactful evening with Tommy McBrayer, Founder and Executive Director of Don’t Shoot Guns, Shoot Hoops—a grassroots movement dedicated to ending gun violence and empowering youth through mentorship, sports, and community leadership. Together, we’ll dive into the real-life impact of gun violence on our neighborhoods and examine how youth-centered programs are changing lives and building safer communities. We’ll also explore practical ways we can support peace, opportunity, and healing in our communities, starting right here at home.

Rev. Danielle Jones and Rev. Dustin Moretz
Wednesday,
October 22, 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel
Have you ever wondered how our church decides how to serve beyond our walls? Join us for an evening of reflection and conversation with Danielle and Dustin as we take a closer look at WCC’s approach to mission and outreach. Together, we’ll explore how the Mission & Outreach Board listens and responds to the needs of our wider community, and how we build relationships with mission partners to support their work in the world. Whether you’re new to WCC or a longtime member, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the heart of our church’s work in the world and how you might get involved.

Katherine Rebstock | GiGi’s Playhouse
Wednesday,
October 29, 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel
You’re invited to a meaningful evening of learning and connection with Katherine Rebstock of GiGi’s Playhouse, a national organization advocating for individuals with Down syndrome and working toward greater disability justice, awareness, and inclusion. Over the course of this evening we’ll learn about the barriers people with disabilities face in our communities and dive into the tangible ways we can foster greater inclusion in our lives, community, and society. This evening is a chance to expand our hearts, deepen our understanding, and commit to building a society where everyone is seen, valued, and empowered.

Wednesdays, November 5, 12, and 19 4:00 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. in the Colonnade
This November, explore the fascinating and complex relationship between religion and public health. Join Rev. Dan Stark on Wednesdays in the Colonnade for a deep dive into how faith, particularly the Christian tradition, has shaped health outcomes throughout American history. From the founding of early hospitals and mental health institutions by religious groups to the modern debates around vaccine hesitancy, masking, and reproductive health, religion has profoundly impacted individual and community well-being. We’ll examine both the positive contributions (like healthy lifestyle promotion and robust social support networks) and the negative challenges this relationship has posed. This class will explore case studies and current research, offering a nuanced look at the surprising connections between religion and public health.
