Wayzata Community Church Wind Phone

There is a team of WCC members working to design and build a “Wind Phone” at Wayzata Community Church.  On All Saints Day of 2024, Lindy Purdy shared the story of the original Wind Phone in Japan. The Wind Phone is symbolic. It carries messages through the wind— not the phone wires.  (Click here to listen to Lindy’s sermon.)

The Wind Phone and its location at Wayzata Community Church will create an inviting contemplative space for our congregation and the wider community. Placed in a peaceful outdoor setting, the Wind Phone will offer a gentle way to release what is unspoken, to grieve, to remember, to heal. We welcome your prayers and support for the Wind Phone project which began work in May of 2025. For more information, contact Lindy McClure. In this episode of This American Life, producer Miki Meek tells the story of a phone booth in Japan that attracts thousands of people who lost loved ones in the 2011 tsunami and earthquake. A Japanese TV crew from NHK Sendai filmed people inside the phone booth, whose phone is not connected to anything at all.
